Its not difficult but there are a few things you need to know – size of cables, fusing, switches, etc.
You can find a host of books at Amazon and a good enough one is ‘The 12 volt Bible for boats’ – it is about £12 and tells you all you need to know in a fairly simple form. Do get it as fire is a big hazard on boats especially if you have bottled gas as well.

You could probably use a couple of AA batteries – after all, 17" is only a toy boat.

Perhaps you meant 17′ (feet) and not 17" (inches).

Agreed with the squirl but there are actual marine batteries that you can buy but there easy to hook up like a car

I am assuming there is already power running to the fuse block.

You need to run the positive + and negative – wires from all of your accessories to the fuse panel. Some accessories have an in-line fuse and you can run these together straight to an unfused terminal in the fuse panel. If no in-line fuse is present on a particular accessory then you will need to run it to a fused terminal. I would say you could put a stereo, fishfinder and maybe the GPS together on one fused terminal and all devices for safety (bilge pump, vhf and nav lights) on there own terminal. You will need to run the navigation lights to a switch on the dash then to the fuse panel. Make sure you have fuses to match the load requirements of your electronics.
