wow english talk annoying…
The Colorado does have a technical learning curve to it, but it is WAAS enabled (close to 3 meter accuracy). Anything from Magellan is going to shabby, especially their North American customer service department. I never heard of Satmap and will be looking into this brand.
I’ve got the Garmin E-Trex Vista C, had it a few years. Mainy use it to give me a grid ref. The batteries last ages, virtually indestructible, accurate to within a few metres. I’ve got the UK topo map loaded onto it too. Got me out of a few scrapes.
Of course, NEVER go out walking without your paper OS map.
Its too bad that SATMAP does not cover Canada. It looks very impressive.
I agree with Zedith, if you want it to work you need to charge it first. Plus it seems the old man was a bit of a bumbler. Things might have been better with a less, how should we say, odd tester.
You’re saying that the Garmin gives inaccurate results when the battery is low? He clearly showed that the device was operating when he said that it was too slow to keep up with changes in direction.
The problem is that when he changed the batteries, he needed to re-calibrate the compass, otherwise it loses accuracy. I learnt this the hard way as well, but it is very easy to do, and once that’s done, is spot on.
still love the GARMIN Colorado and am gonna get a handheld GPS wich one shall i get?
Also they should compare apple to apples on interfaces, if they wanted to talk about ease of input, use the Garmin Oregon instead since then they would both be touch screens. I have heard that you should manually reduce the amount of track-log to get more accurate results than the default.
I have heard the Colorado wheel navigation takes some getting used to, but I have to agree the old bungler had the Garmin set up for failure by not having charged batteries, not re-calibrating the compass and not holding it level, he was holding it upright, the screen said right on it “hold level”
and right away, the colorado guy runs into the biggest problem with this unit. which is extremely short battery life when you’re using controls and navigating screens a lot.
Having owned 3 different Garmins I am not surprised that he has such problems with it. All 3 have been badly thought through and for me, enough is enough. Also, you can’t beat OS, so without it the other two will never compare.
a gps should be able to work if its not level
as you note the GPSr works fine in any orientation, though the antenna is more accurate in one orientation than another. It is the magnetic compass that needs to be level. So if you are on the screen following a bearing it won’t work unless you hold it pretty close to the screen being horizontal. any of the other views are fine in any orientation.
look at the clip at 4:19, it says on the screen to “hold level”. If he had lifted the gps up with the sceen off level while facing the wrong direction the mag compass wouldn’t update until he levels it out again
I am very happy with my Garmin Oregon 300
Very cool.
I Think that the problem of the Garmin was not really the Gadget, but the USER!!!
Welcome into the world of electronics old timer. The Colorade is useless but the User too.
i have the misfortune to own a Colorado 300……total crap
The Colorado is useless. I was lucky enough to get my Garmin dealer to give me an Oregon in exchange of the Colorado. The Oregon line is brilliant and would probably have won this test?
not a far competition the guy that won was obviously the most tech handy and the most athletic, it doesn’t matter who you got what device the young would of finished 1st, the girl second, and the old guy would of gotten lost. not just cause he is old he just seemed off, to busy complaining even if he was tech handy or athletic, i have used the Colorado on 20 mile hikes with no problem, then again no gps has given me problems.
let do a real test shall we
forget the chick and old fart
hand it to scouts or army and let them simulate similar situations with them go
what are u talking about – 879twist ?this is the exact video review we want to see, people who haven’t got a clue about GPS’s get to test them and find out how easy they are to use and not skilled map readers who will just find it a piece of cake !!!!
I have had numerous different gps units fr geocaching and walking across the moors, but have to say the colorado has been the best all rounder with the English maps installed. The zoom levels are excellent and have found more geocaches using this device more than the others. The extra’s on this device are too many to list , the thumb wheel is brill once you get the hang of it. Anyway who would go walking with a device they havent become aquainted with, very dangerous!!!
