Bushnell Backtrack GPS Review 2
In this 2nd video I again review the Bushnell Backtrack GPS Personal Location Finder. You should watch the first review for information on how to use the unit. The Bushnell device combines GPS with a digital compass to help you navigate back to a spot you have been to before (such as your house, where you parked your car, etc). The unit can store up to 3 “waypoints”. I provide a brief explanation of the unit and then provide a field test. Note, this unit does not utilize maps and requires no subscriptions. Hence, it is reasonably inexpensive (roughly ). My field test indicates that although there are some faults, they can be usually be overcome, providing a useful tool when hiking. I have absolutely no connection with the manufacturer and merely wish to provide an unbiased review of the product. If you use this product (or similar products) be forewarned that they can fail – you should not rely on them solely, especially if you are orienteering. Be prudent and exercise caution. Also, my explanation of how the unit works is based purely on some experience with robots and is an educated guess – I have not found any good documentation. QSTARZ and IDC (Ecco) appear to provide similar devices. I have not tested them. I would love to hear from anyone who has done a comparison.
great test but please edit down the video
Great review! This is just what I was looking for. Most others were just show and tell… without real demonstrations. Thanks!
Thank you! I didn’t like a lot of the other videos either – I really wanted to show a fun field test. I did it 3 out of 3 times, and my wife did this successfully on her first attempt also (finding the bag in the field).
It was like playing hide and seek.
Sorry – I was a prof for 7 years – rather err on the side of verbosity and give people a feel for time (i.e., the unit does require some patience).
exellent review thanks …question if the battery goes dead will it retain the memory? when you replace battery? i heard stories that a gps must be calibrated regularly to retain true accuricy?
great focus!
Yeah – sorry – my cheapie Canon camera has trouble in video at small distances. Does anyone know if there is a setting on the camera to help that? it is the SD1100…
Good question! Let me see what happens…
You were geocaching.
There is Macro, but it’s not for video. Main reason for responding is to say you can get a small program called CHDK and you can use it to make your video cleaner, but they will take up more memory. Google CHDK. I checked and the SD1100 will work with the program. I personally use it on my SD400. Program is FREE, so I am not trying to sell anything here, just hoping to help if possible. Will work on a variety of camera’s, making it that much more useful folks.
can this be used to geocache ? can you start at home and pop in some long lat numbers and then go hunt down a geocache ?
@Y4vin: The user interface doesn’t allow this. But I suspect a good ECE student could find a way to do it by pulling it apart.
